A new day is an inflection point.  Night is over, day has begun.  A fresh start is a prime time to consider your direction and make subtle changes.  And the same thing can be said about a new year.  It’s a clear line of demarcation that separates what happened in the past from our vision for the future.

Use this new beginning as a time to reflect on the changes you will make in your practice this year.

Each year I make about 500 to 1,000 new friends, and that’s how I describe my connections with law firm partners as a legal recruiter. I talk with partners in big law firms about career goals and opportunities that may align with them, and each time I approach the conversation I have only one goal in mind: curiosity.  If they are successful, why are they successful? If they are not, what changes do they need to make to reach their goals? Sometimes that change includes changing firms. Most of the time it does not.  Most people are generally happy where they are, but that doesn’t mean my conversation ends if they are not a prospect for one of my clients. It’s actually a beginning. I want to know why they are happy and what they are doing well to thrive.  And from this empirical research, there is a pattern and a trend that I want to share with you.
